Itinerary
Day 1, Madrid airport
On day 1 you arrive in Madrid. We will pick you up from the airport and bring you to your hotel so you can un-pack, rest, relax and aclimatize a bit.
Day 2, Madrid
Today you receive your motorcycle. We'll give you some time to "fiddle" with it to make sure all is to your liking and all your luggage fits in the panniers.
In the afternoon there will be a briefing in which we tell you everything you need to know about the tour, the roads, the customs, etc. We give you the SatNav and show you how to use it.
Day 3, Lleida
301 miles / 485 km (6 hours)
Leaving Madrid the route first brings you to the cave-houses in the little hamlet Civica, then crosses the mountains to the castle of Molina de Aragon. From there you continue past the castle of Alcañiz and follow the Rio Ebro to Lleida. Just to get you in the spirit of things.
Day 4, Carcassonne
205 miles / 330 km (6½ hours)
Today things start to get more serious. Quickly the route gains altitude and enters Andora, a tiny little country high in the Pyrenees. It goes over the pass de la Casa, which is with 7,900 feet or 2,408 meters the highest paved road in the Pyrenees.
On the way down you can have a look at a “pulsating well”. An underground river that emerges, but not in a normal way.
The day’s ride ends in the Castle-city of Carcassonne.
Day 5, Cavaillon
205 miles / 330 km (6 hours)
The first stop of today is in the enchanting medieval village of Minerve, followed by a visit to the Grotte de Clamouse. A lone watch-tower in the middle of the road is also one of the more unusual sights.
Day 6, Vence
195 miles / 315 km (6 hours)
If you are lucky and it is the beginning of summer, you’ll ride through the most intense purple lavender fields for as far as the eye can see and the nose can smell and an old ocher-quary makes you think you are on Mars. After that the gorges du Verdon will test your curving skills and your nerves as some of these curves are very very high above the river. A visit to the fabulous old village of Saint Paul will calm your nerves again right before you end the day in Vence.
Day 7, Saluzzo
186 miles / 300 km (5½ hours)
Today it is time for some height-records, starting with the Cime de la Bonette (9,383 feet / 2,860 meters), the col Agnel (9,002 feet / 2,744 meters) and thousands of hairpin-curves. For a bit of rest there is a petrified waterfall.
Day 8, Chamonix
205 miles / 330 km (5½ hours)
Today you cross the Col du mont Cenis. It’s the place where Hanibal crossed the Alps with his war-elephants. Passing the high-alpine lake Lac du mont Cenis the route takes you to the col de l’Iseran (9,087 feet / 2,770 meters) and the glacier lakes around Val-d’Isere before diving into the 7.2 miles (11.6 kilometer) long Mont Blanc tunnel. At its deepest point you will have 7,500 feet (2,300 meter) of mountain above your head.
Day 9, Chamonix
Today is a resting day, but if you follow our itinerary you won’t do much resting. Start the day with a ride in the téléphérique (cable car) to the top of the Aiguille du Midi at 12,605 feet (3,842 meter) and in the afternoon a “train-ride” to the “Sea of Ice” (Mer de Glace) to walk into an ice-cave.
Day 10, Luino
193 miles / 310 km (5½ hours)
“Only” 8,100 feet (2,469 meters) above sea-level it is not really remarkable, but the “Great St. Bernard” pass is the where the St. Bernard dogs were bred by monks from the St. Bernard monastery and trained to rescue stranded travelers, so of course the route passes this, on its way to Lago Maggiore.
Day 11, Prato allo Stelvio
233 miles / 375 km (6 hours)
Riding through the tunnels, curving the side of the lake for a bit and then the route takes you up again to the Gotthard pass (6,909 feet / 2,106 meter), the Umbrail pass(8,205 feet / 2,501 meter) and finally, the pass of passes that every self-respecting biker must have ridden once in his/her life: The Stelvio (9,048 feet / 2,758 meter).
Day 12, Parma
220 miles / 355 km (5½ hours)
Slowly the route goes down to the more oxygen rich level of Lake Garda. Here it follows the shores and via many spectacular tunnels it brings you to the “Strada della Forra” which stars in many action-movies and not because it is dull riding.
Day 13, Finale Ligure
174 miles / 280 km (4½ hours)
Just outside of Parma (famous for its cheese by the way) you’ll find the largest bamboo labyrinth in the world, so give that a try. Then cross the mountains and take a hike to a unique ghost town that looks just as it did when it was hastily abandoned many years ago.
Day 14, Nice
90 miles / 145 km (3 hours)
Today the route follows the “Cote d’Azur”. Time for some beaching or a cappuccino on the boulevard, looking at super yachts and super models in Monaco.
The day ends on the boulevard in Nice, the pearl of the jet set.
Day 15, Châteauneuf-les-Martigues
155 miles / 250 km (4½ hours)
Still following the cote ‘d Azur the route passes the Jet-Set paradise of Cannes, and Saint-Raphael, but also some disaster tourism at a collapsed dam. Near Marseille you can visit a unique tunnel… for boats. And we are talking about a 4.4 mile (7.1 kilometer) long tunnel… for boats.
Day 16, La Malene
205 miles / 330 km (6 hours)
Today the route takes you through the magnificent “gorges de Ardeche” and the just as impressive “gorges du Tarn”.
Day 17, La Malene
Time for some old fashioned adventure in a kayak. You against the river, or if you are not up to class 5 rapids, you slowly drifting along the river and enjoying the tall canyon cliffs around you.
Day 18, Carcassonne
183 miles / 295 km (5 hours)
Continuing in the “gorges du Tarn” the route takes you to the Chaos de Montpelier, an area with massive and weirdly shaped limestone rocks. This is followed by a trip underneath and then across the highest bridge in the world (higher than the Eiffel tower in Paris). If you like French cheese, the Roquefort caves are there to visit and if you have not yet seen enough rocks, Le Sidobre rocks, a collection of massive boulders is on the way.
Day 19, Ulldemolins
248 miles / 400 km (6½ hours)
Ever seen a “solar furnace”? Today you will. And since Pisa was not on this route, we give you the leaning tower of Santa Eugenia. Later today you can enjoy the medieval castle-town of Montfalco.
Day 20, Albarracin
211 miles / 340 km (5 hours)
First a ride through a town that is almost molten together with its rocky surroundings. Later today you can take a walk inside a canyon, on wooden walkways that hang of the side of the cliffs. Then, passing lakes and riding curves until you arrive in Albarracin where you'll believe you traveled back into time.
Day 21, Madrid
158 miles / 255 km (4½ hours)
A last day of riding, crossing the Alto Tajo Natural Park, the dam of Entrepenas, and the scenery of La Mancha, the country of Don Quichote.
Day 22, Madrid airport
Today we take you to the airport, help you find the right checkin-desk and say goodbye, untill next time.
